Frankfurt–Hahn Airport is a former military airport which was used by the United States Air Force during the Cold War. On 30 September 1993, the airport was handed over to the German civil administration. The government decided to turn the airfield into a civil airport (called Hahn Airport) to reduce traffic to the nearby Frankfurt Main Airport. The first civilian flight from Hahn Airport was a charter flight to Palma de Mallorca on 22 May 1993. In 2002, the airport became famous because of a legal proceedings against Ryanair after they requested to change the name of the airport to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport although the airport is about 120 kilometers away by car from Frankfurt. Ryanair was allowed to keep the name.
